Michaela’s brother, Trenton, attended the U.S. Naval Academy with Ben. Trenton would spend Thanksgivings with the Herbolds since they lived close to the Academy. Despite their families being familiar with one another for years, Michaela had never met Ben in person. The pair finally met at Trenton’s wedding at the rehearsal dinner. The next night at the reception, Ben asked for the last dance. The rest is history!
Ben was on deployment in Sicily, Italy, for six months. He had five days of leave and for Michaela’s graduation present, she got to visit him. Ben told Michaela to get dressed for a nice dinner in Taormina, which is a neighboring town. After dinner, the couple explored the city and went to an Ancient Greek Theater overlooking the coast and the city of Taormina. Ben tricked her into thinking they were taking a timed picture, but he was secretly filming the whole proposal! What she didn’t know was that she had transported her own engagement ring overseas! Michaela’s mom had made Ben’s favorite snack – candied pecans – and hid the engagement ring in the bag. Little did Michaela know she was carrying her engagement ring the whole time!
